Tasting the World’s Largest Crab -Dining at Noichi Shokudo in Heda-

Explore Izu & Hakone

Arrival at Heda Port

The sea was calm and peaceful, with a refreshing breeze carrying the scent of saltwater. It was the perfect start to our culinary adventure.

Many people were fishing at the Heda Fishing Port—next time, I’ll bring a rod and try my luck!

Just across from the sea is the Heda Fisheries Direct Sales Market.
We took a quick look inside to see what treasures the sea had to offer.

The Star of Heda: The Japanese Spider Crab

Our main goal today was to try the Japanese Spider Crab (Takaashigani), a rare delicacy and the pride of Heda.
These deep-sea giants live at depths of 200 to 500 meters, and some can stretch over 3 meters from claw to claw!

They’re hard to come by in other parts of Japan, especially in Kansai, because their flavor deteriorates quickly after being caught. You’ve probably seen them in aquariums—but here, you can actually eat one!

Affordable Finds and a Local Favorite

We spotted sea cucumbers for just ¥600—surprisingly cheap!

Then we made our way to today’s destination:
Noichi Shokudo, a local restaurant where you can enjoy deep-sea delicacies straight from the ocean.

We were seated on the second floor in a tatami room with a fantastic ocean view.

Time to Splurge!

When we saw the price of the Japanese Spider Crab… it was no small decision.
But hey—it’s crab. That’s just how it is.

We debated ordering a more affordable set meal (which also looked delicious), but in the end…

The local beer from Heda looks tempting too.

We’re in Heda!
Let’s go big and try the real deal!

Feast Fit for a King

Ta-daa!

We ordered a Japanese Spider Crab worth ¥16,000.
Let’s start with an Asahi bottled beer—cheers!

We also tried the Red Shrimp Shell Set Meal for ¥1,650.
It’s a full-on crustacean celebration!

The crab miso was rich and delicious—
This is what crab lovers live for.
It pairs perfectly with beer, and we couldn’t help but eat in blissful silence.

With such long legs, there’s plenty of meat inside. So satisfying!

More Than Just Crab

Noichi Shokudo is also popular for its wide range of seafood set meals.
Next time, we’ll come back to try one of those.

Big thanks to the fishermen of Heda for always bringing in such incredible seafood!
